From a four-department faculty in 2000 E.C. to a full college with fourteen departments today.
The College of Social Sciences and Humanities was initially started as the Faculty of Social Sciences with four departments — Applied Geography, Sociology, Psychology, and Ethiopian Languages and Literature–Amharic — in 2000 E.C. During that time (1999 E.C.), it worked intimately with the Faculty of Education (Geography, History, and English), and instructors worked inter-faculties. At the beginning, the Faculty enrolled 141 students.
In 2002 E.C., the faculty was reorganized to the College level. Due to the cease of the Faculty of Education, some departments (Applied Geography and Geography Education) were merged, and other departments like History, English, and Amharic were incorporated under it. Since then, a number of departments have been opened, and today there are about 14 departments — including the recently opened 3 new departments on local languages.

Quality learning-teaching activities delivered by academic staff across regular, summer, and extension programs.
The College of Social Sciences and Humanities has been conducting quality learning-teaching activities using academic staff members with different fields of specialization, across regular, summer, and extension undergraduate and postgraduate programs.
To support the teaching-learning activities, there are two laboratories under the Department of English Language and Literature and the Department of Geography and Environmental Studies. The ELIC Center and GIS are very important in giving practical teaching for students, using the technical assistants hired under those departments.
The college has graduated many undergraduate and postgraduate students with the best knowledge, skills, and attitudes toward their future careers.
