From a shared building with 215 students to one of Ethiopia's fast-growing comprehensive universities.
Mizan-Tepi University (MTU) is one of the second-generation universities in Ethiopia that came into existence in 2006. Currently the university operates across three campuses, all located in the South West Regional State of Ethiopia. MTU's main campus and its Teaching Hospital are located in the Bench-Sheko Zone, Mizan-Aman town administration, while its branch campus is in the Sheka Zone, Tepi town administration.
The Teaching Hospital was originally established in 1986 as Mizan Tefari Hospital. In November 2016 it was merged with Mizan-Tepi University with the intention of producing qualified health professionals and providing better medical care for the community.
The university began its teaching-learning journey by sharing a building with the Mizan Agriculture, Technical, Vocational Education and Training (ATVET) College. At that time, it admitted only 215 regular undergraduate students in the Faculty of Education at the Mizan campus.

MTU now enrolls around 20,000 students across 51 departments in six colleges and five schools, offering 54 undergraduate and 42 postgraduate programs. In its 18-year journey, the university has graduated more than 40,000 students.

A university where the nation's diversity meets.
MTU exists in a place where different nations, nationalities and peoples live together — an area that best reminds us of the perfect model of a mini-Ethiopia. The three campuses of MTU are situated amid deep green and unique natural and anthropogenic diversity. The enormous potential and gifted natural resources of the Southwest provide MTU with a huge prospect to project into new grounds of education and research development. As a result, MTU makes great use of its trained professionals and scholars to achieve the country's educational goals.
