“Mizan-Tepi University works on the effective implementation of the community-based animal breed improvement that in the future ensures the maji sheep breed in the area will be recognized and selected at the national level and the life of farmers will be realistically transformed.” said Dr. Girma Tilahun, V/President for Research and Community Engagement of Mizan-Tepi University. The V/President explained that the community-based animal bread improvement project has been focused on the Office and the office will continue to support by researching. Thereby, to register the breed globally, being encouraged by the promising results achieved in the first phase, until the economic benefits of the maji sheep are recognized in our country as a Bonga sheep breed; and then the economic benefits of the community are realized.Recently, a one-day field observation and workshop on the implementation of a community-based sheep breeding project was held at Maji Woreda, West Omo zone. In the program, the pertinent university management and experts, stakeholders, elders of the Maji Woreda, officials and experts were participated.Dr. Regassa Begna, Director for Technology Transfer and Community Engagement (TTCE) directorate and Dr. Askale G/Michael, Director for Research, Publication Ethics and Dissemination directorate of Mizan-Tepi University have described all the day’s visit. They noted that the visit helps to recognize that community-based bread improvement is very effective and that the university has been initiated to work more on developing a wide range of projects in the future, especially in the areas of crop production and potential natural resources. On the other hand, the woreda”s Agriculture and natural resource office, and especially the farmers, expressed great appreciation to Instructor Zelalem Admasu, instructor in the animal science department of College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, for his great professional contribution to the success of the breed improvement project without exceptions.Consequently Instructor Zelalem has presented a detailed report on the implementation of the project both in the report and field observations. The report indicated that the project has grown well supported by the community, and that the project implemented has resulted in the finding of maji sheep that give birth to two or more cubs at the same time; and within a short period of time, more than 300 cubs with a high weight have been born.Finally, the workday”s government expressed its keen interest and readiness to provide research sites in the woreda to assist research activities in the agricultural sector. In line with this, Maji woreda administration has contributed a certificate of recognition to mizan-Tepi university on behalf of the beneficiary community and government of the woreda for significant contribution to the promotion of the Maji Sheep Breed Improvement Project in the woreda, West Omo Zone, and the transformation of farmers’ lives in the locality.
