Mizan-Tepi University, taking advantage of the government’s emphasis on higher education and training, and other good opportunities, has been Caring out tasks by developing a vision-based plan to address internal weaknesses and further rationalize its strengths, in particular issues that need to be performed by the institution regarding reforms including exit exam implementation, digitalization, institutional independence in the field of its mission and focus, and the expansion and strengthening of international relations. Based on this, the first half years performance report has been presented to the universitys council and an exhaustive discussion has been undertaken on.
Regarding ensuring access and equity in higher education, the report has detailed an encouraging performance in Student total enrolment in undergraduate and postgraduate studies in regular and extension programmes; instructors ratio in different educational qualification; an internal quality assurance system; students’ passing rate in remedial exam; Participation of international students; Student-centred pedagogical delivery approaches; instructors sent for training to universities and other institutions overseas; Participation and completion rates of female students in various programs; and Participation of students from some areas in need of special support.
On the other hand, the half year performance report shows the focuses of research areas as per the focuses of ministry of Education; number of online research journals ready for operation; research papers submitted to the University repository; discussions with stakeholders on the results of the research; number of research works published in reputable journals; trainings provided for various stockholders at different level; some trainings in collaboration with other institutions regarding grant writing were among others.
Furthermore Maji and Bonga sheep breed improvement project has benefited some pastoralist community; Sheko Cattle Breed Improvement Project has been underway and generates an encouraging income; STEM Center has been reorganized to provide training for students; a center for Technology and Incubation has been organized; the best ideas have been screened from instructors and students who are uniquely gifted in technology; and free legal consultation services were provided to some community members in need.
Dr. Wako Geda, the president of Mizan-Tepi University, after the presentation of the half-year performance report, has strongly pronounced that the performance result has been encouraging and in the next four months, all working units of the university need to focus on their respective task to ensure the implementation of the key performance indicator (KPI) signed with ministry of education. Subsequently, the reports would be presented to the president and reviewed with special attention within every two weeks next, and finally the report has been totally approved by the council.
