Mizan- Tepi University School of Law was officially launched in 2009. Though, it has been recently established, the School is a preeminent one in realizing the objectives and the values of higher education institutions by producing competitive graduates with qualified knowledge, skills and professional ethics who could overcome the draconian problems in Ethiopia and shifting the image of Ethiopian justice administration system.

The need to open the School of Law is to increase the accessibility of legal education in wider context of the country. By the same rationale with other Law Schools, it is opened to prepare competent legal professionals who work for the prevalence of rule of law, democracy, human rights, good governance, equality, tolerance, social justice and sustainable economic development. It shall train and graduate adequate manpower at different levels to meet the ever increasing needs of the Ethiopian society in the field of law. Moreover, the Law School endeavors to produce vibrant research community so as to generate knowledge through research and publication. The Law School also educates students who could promote community based activities so as to solve pressing socio-legal problems.

The School is one of the strongest and effective Law Schools of the country in academic quality, research and community service activities. Furthermore, the School of Law has vigilantly been involving in national moot court competitions and won the 2016 national moot court competition, which was hosted by Wollo University, School of Law.

Nowadays, the School of Law has offering LL.B Degree in Regular, summer and Weekend Program. Besides, it has a plan to commence LL.M (Master of Laws) Program in the forthcoming years.

  •  The Law School desires to become one of the leading Law Schools in teaching, research and community services at national level by enhancing the quality of legal education and efficient delivery of services in accomplishing academic excellence.

  • The School of Law intends to produce solid legal scholars with holistic knowledge on the areas of rule of law, democracy and justice; inquiry scientific researches and provide unreserved legal aid services to the community.   

  • The School of Law generally aims to provide legal education, community services, undertake demand driven researches that are congruous with the needs and development of Ethiopia. Specifically, it intends to:

    • Provide quality legal education in line with the core values, principles, and policies of Higher Education Institutions ;
    • Produce graduates who fortified with legal knowledge, and skills that enable them to serve the country as judges, public defenders, prosecutors, advocates or academicians with critical thinking,  self-inquiry and analytical ability  as well as professional responsibility;
    • Teach and conduct research, and provide services that boost equality and are free from any discrimination on the basis of ethnicity, race, religious background, sex, political opinion or any other justification;
    • To produce professionals who can deliver effective legal advice and consultancy to the public institutions, intergovernmental organizations, non-governmental organizations private sectors or individuals;
    • Strive to develop & broadcast mechanisms for the prevention and resolution of disputes through alternative dispute resolution mechanism (ADR) such as negotiation, compromise, reconciliation, mediation, arbitration and so forth;
    • Create and sustain a close network with all stakeholders including government, business & alumni to ensure their participation in shaping learning, teaching, research and service;
    • Lay down an institutional system that ensures the accountability of school of law leaders and staff members; and
    • Develop and disseminate the culture of respect, tolerance, and living together among the people of Ethiopia especially in catchment zones and districts.
Structural Organization

The School Dean is a chief executive of the Law School and followed by one Associate Registrar, and Department Head, who are directly responsible to dean.  It has also comprised of three coordination units namely, Free Legal Aid Office Coordination Unit, Academic Programs Coordination Unit, Research and Publication Coordination Unit.
