The College of Medicine and Health Sciences (CMHS) at Mizan Tepi University boasts a rich history of growth and development. The college was established in 2010 G.C. as the Health Science College, and it has steadily expanded its academic offerings and earned its current designation in 2022 G.C. As one of the six largest colleges within the university, CMHS plays a crucial role in nurturing future healthcare professionals.
The college's journey began in 2010 G.C. with the launch of the Nursing department, welcoming its first cohort of students. Demonstrating a commitment to comprehensive healthcare education, the following year saw the introduction of Public Health, Midwifery, Pharmacy, and Biomedical departments. The academic expansion continued with the inauguration of the Medical Laboratory and Medicine departments in 2017 and 2018 G.C., respectively. Most recently, in 2022 G.C., CMHS further broadened its scope by initiating student admissions in Psychiatry and Environmental Health programs.
The college's leadership structure ensures effective administration across its teaching hospital and academic programs. Headed by a Chief Executive Director (CED), CMHS benefits from the expertise of several directors:
Chief Academic Director: Oversees all academic matters pertaining to the schools and departments within the college.
Chief Clinical Director: Steers the delivery of clinical services to the community.
Chief Research and Community Service Director: Champions research activities, community service initiatives, and industry collaborations.
Chief Administrative Director: Provides vital administrative support, functioning as the backbone of the college's operations.
CMHS offers a robust academic curriculum encompassing both undergraduate and postgraduate programs. Currently, the college boasts eight undergraduate programs in Nursing, Public Health, Pharmacy, Midwifery, Medical Laboratory Sciences, Medicine, Psychiatry, and Environmental Health. Complementing these are five postgraduate programs in Epidemiology, General Public Health, Reproductive Health, Human Nutrition, and Environmental Health. Additionally, the college provides specialized post-basic programs in Nursing, Midwifery, and Medical Laboratory Sciences.
The college's faculty is impressive, with a strong team of educators actively engaged in imparting knowledge. As of today, CMHS boasts 16 assistant lecturers, 113 lecturers, 56 assistant professors with second degrees, two assistant professors with third degrees, and one esteemed associate professor. The college's dedicated staff includes 188 personnel on duty, with an additional 80 pursuing further studies. Furthermore, CMHS benefits from the expertise of 25 technical assistants and 7 administrative staff members. Notably, the college takes pride in having an expatriate staff member specializing in Anatomy.
The current student body thrives under the guidance of this exceptional faculty. CMHS is proud to host a total of 1101 students, with 1023 enrolled in undergraduate programs and 78 pursuing postgraduate studies. This vibrant community of learners is poised to make significant contributions to the healthcare landscape upon graduation.
